Dr. Hugh Matthews became employed by Emmitsburg Veterinary Hospital in 1985, working with EVH founder, Dr. William Carr and Dr. Patrick Favret. He and his wife were able to purchase the practice in 1989. Having grown up in San Antonio, Texas, he graduated from Texas A&M in 1979 with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science.
With professional interests in surgery, dermatology and ophthalmology, Dr. Matthews attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1985.
Enjoying anything that has to do with being outdoors, Dr. Matthews particularly likes fishing, hiking, and sailing.
Outside of work, Dr. Matthews spends a lot of his time helping the community. He is a very active member of the YWCA and member of Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve. Dr. Matthews and his family also spent a year in Africa teaching children at the Faraja primay school, a school for children with disabilities.
His family includes his wife Nell, and three children, Kate, Will, and Ann. His extended family also consists of a mutt named Phineas, a Labrador named Duncan and a cat named Ella.
