Veterinarian and practice owner Dr. Hugh Matthews became employed by Emmitsburg Veterinary Hospital in 1985, working with EVH founder, Dr. William Carr and Dr. Patrick Favret. He and his wife were able to purchase the practice in 1989. Having grown up in San Antonio, Texas, he graduated from Texas A&M in 1979 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science.
With professional interests in surgery, dermatology and ophthalmology, Dr. Matthews attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1985.
Enjoying anything that has to do with being outdoors, Dr. Matthews particularly likes fishing, hiking, and sailing. He donates medical and surgical services to the SPCA and sponsors low-cost cat spay and neuter clinics.
His family includes his wife and co-owner, Nell Matthews, along with three children, Kate, Will, and Ann. His extended “family” also consists of two dogs, a yellow lab named Sully, a mutt named Phineas and a domestic shorthaired cat named Luna.
