Our Practice

Emmitsburg Veterinary Hospital (EVH) has undergone changes and improvements throughout the years in keeping with the many ongoing advancements in veterinary medicine. We focus on providing the highest quality medical and surgical services for your companion animals.

The Emmitsburg Veterinary Hospital Team is committed to providing quality veterinary care throughout the life of your dog or cat. We understand the special role your pet plays in your family and are dedicated to becoming your partner in your pet's health care.

Our History

Dr. and Mrs. William Carr founded Emmitsburg Veterinary Hospital in 1955 with the help of Dave Bushman and only two receptionists. For the first 15 years, the practice operated out of their home, which is now a private residence next door. The hospital opened at 7:00 am each day treating cats and dogs and then an average of 11 farm calls were run thereafter to treat large animals.

As the practice and services expanded, the hospital then moved into its current location, the barn. Over the next few years Dr. Carr had several associate veterinarians working with him. In 1985 Dr. Matthews and his wife joined the practice and later purchased it 1989. Dr. Carr retired and became mayor of Emmitsburg for over a decade. He would often visit the hospital and share stories of the "good ol' days."

Dave Bushman continued working for EVH up until his passing in 2006. He was loved by the whole staff as a grandfather figure, and clients still to this day share stories of him. Sadly in 2012, we also lost our founder Dr. Carr.

Through all the changes the practice has gone through over the years, we still strive every day to bring the best medical care to our patients and support for our clients and continue the family atmosphere that Dr. Carr started in 1955.

Our Mission

Our goal is to provide excellent companion animal health care through humane and compassionate treatment. Our dedicated, professional staff strives to secure the human-animal bond, enhance quality of life, alleviate animal suffering, and to promote preventive medicine using the latest in veterinary technology.
